Heureka Big Band

The production enlivens the atmosphere of American dance music events from the ’40s,’ 50s, with star singers and monumental brass music sound. The band plays mostly American jazz and swing standards, but their repertoire includes contemporary Hungarian music, for example several compositions of Roland Szentpáli.

The formation was created by Pál Lombos’s vision, who is the band leader and double-bass player, in 2014 when Gábor Hollerung asked him to make a studio recording with his swing band for the New Year’s album of the Budapest Dohnányi Orchestra. Then he decided to rescore the swing band’s tracks to a big band setup, and he managed to bring together a fantastic band with his orchestra joined by the Budapest Saxophone Quartet, the Corpus Trombone Quartet and the Trumpet section of the Dohnányi Orchestra. Although this orchestral lineup is a rare feature in the genre, the big band has become a huge success: in 2015 they debuted at the MÜPA National Concert Hall with two sold-out concerts, then they were promptly invited to play on one of Budapest’s biggest open-air stage where they gave two full successive summer festival concerts. In January 2016, at the BMC they made a concert-like recording, of which a video was taken. They are regular participants of major domestic festivals and events.

Constant guests from previous years: Micheller Myrtill, Szirtes Edina Mókus, Oláh Gergő, Szabó Ádám, Szentpáli Roland, Szepesi Bence
